It is not a font converter or a stylistic toy — it is a linguistically rigorous translation engine that understands Old English grammar, case systems, and historical vocabulary.
How It Works
Unlike most “Old English” tools that simply swap modern words for archaic-looking characters, our translator uses a hybrid architecture:
- The Bosworth-Toller Dictionary — Over 58,000 word entries from the gold standard of Old English lexicography, covering inflections, etymologies, and attested usage examples from the Anglo-Saxon period.
- AI-Powered Grammar Engine — A large language model fine-tuned for Old English syntax, handling case declensions, strong/weak verb conjugations, and period-appropriate vocabulary selection.
- Five-Tier Lookup System — Every translation goes through a cascading search: exact dictionary match → inflection resolution → fuzzy matching → AI prediction → AI-glossed fallback. The system tells you which tier produced your result, so you know how reliable it is.
